Chiara, Laura, Helena, and Andreas - The Future of Our Family

A moment comes in life when we understand that time passes far more quickly than we ever imagined. For me, that moment came when I held Chiara in my arms for the first time. She made me a grandfather. Suddenly, I was no longer only the father of my children. A new generation had been born. A little girl who carried part of all of us within her and who, at the same time, stood at the beginning of her own unique story.

With the arrival of Laura, Helena, and Andreas, that circle of love expanded further. Four grandchildren. Four different personalities. Four young people, each with their own dreams, talents, and future. Becoming a grandfather is a feeling that is difficult to describe. You no longer have to decide everything. You no longer carry the same daily responsibility you had when your own children were young. Above all, you can be present. Listen. Enjoy. Create memories. A smile.

A visit. An embrace. A conversation that lasts longer than expected. It is precisely those simple moments that, as the years pass, become our most precious memories. Chiara and Laura are Marco's daughters. When I look at them, I sometimes recognize something of their father. In a smile. A gesture. Their way of looking at the world.

Sometimes it is only for a brief moment. A glance. A certain expression on their face.

But to me, that is enough to suddenly feel Marco very close again. Watching them grow is therefore also a way to feel that his love continues to live. Not only in memories or in the pages of this book, but in two young women, each carrying part of him within her in her own way. That does not mean they must continue their father's life. They do not have to carry his dreams.

They have the right to seek their own path and write their own story. But I hope they will always know how deeply their father loved them. And how much joy they gave him. Helena and Andreas are Michael's children. They too each hold a unique and irreplaceable place within our family. Through their joy of life, spontaneity, and curiosity, they remind me that life always looks toward the future again. That after every difficult period, new hope can be born.

That every generation receives something from those who came before it, but then gives it a meaning of its own. When I look at my four grandchildren, I never want to compare them with one another. Nor did I ever want to do that with my own children. No two human beings are ever identical. And that is precisely where a family's richness lies. Chiara does not have to resemble Laura. Helena does not have to follow the same path as Andreas.

Each of them can become who they truly are. But whatever paths they follow, they remain connected to one another by a story that began much earlier. A story reaching back to their great-grandparents. To Italy. To the mines of Belgium. To the sacrifices of people who left their familiar world to give their children a better future.

When we gather for birthdays and holidays, we speak openly about Marco. His name is not silenced. We tell anecdotes. We recall memories. We laugh about things he said and did. And sometimes, we once again feel the sadness of his absence. But above all, those stories ensure that he continues to be part of our family. In such moments, the past, present, and future come together.

I hope my grandchildren will thus understand that remembering does not have to be only sad. Remembering can also bring warmth. A smile. A connection. And gratitude that someone was allowed to be part of our life. Perhaps one day they will open this book. Perhaps they will want to know who their great-grandparents were. How their family came from Italy to Belgium. Who their grandfather was before he became older and grayer.

Perhaps Chiara and Laura will discover even more about their father in these pages. And perhaps Helena and Andreas will better understand who their uncle Marco was and the place he held within our family. But above all, I hope they will feel all the love that preceded their own story. Not so they will continue living in the past. Not so they must repeat the dreams of earlier generations.

But so they will know where their roots lie. Roots are not chains. They do not hold you back. They give you the strength to remain standing while you choose for yourself the direction in which you want to grow. Chiara. Laura.

Helena. Andreas. You are not only the grandchildren I speak about in this book. You are the future of our family. You do not have to become who we were. You do not have to follow our roads.

Follow your own dreams. Make your own choices. Write your own story. But always know that you come from people who loved. Who worked. Who made sacrifices. Who fell and rose again. And who, above all, continued believing in their family. The most beautiful legacy I can leave you is neither money nor material possessions. It is made of memories. Values. Love.

And the certainty that each one of you holds a unique and irreplaceable place in my heart. As long as you continue telling our family's stories, no one who came before you will ever truly be forgotten. And as long as you continue supporting one another, the love that carried our family through so many years of joy and sorrow will continue living within you.
