An Evening in the Glass Pyramid

Some memories have no date. No written report. No photograph. And yet they continue to live within us more vividly than some of the greatest events in our lives. One such memory takes me back to an evening in the Glass Pyramid. It was already late. The visitors had gone home. The telephone had finally fallen silent. Even the fax, which had printed messages without stopping all day, was at rest.

Night had fallen outside. Rain tapped softly against the Pyramid's glass walls. Inside, only a few lights remained on. I walked slowly through the showroom. The large ceramic display panels stood carefully arranged side by side. Every tile told the story of a factory. Of men and women who had passionately created something beautiful. I stopped for a moment. Not to look at the tiles.

But to listen to the silence. It was not an empty silence. Quite the opposite. It was filled with everything we had experienced that day. From one of the offices, I heard the soft tapping of a keyboard. I knew immediately who was still there. Marco. As so often, he was completely absorbed in his work. When I entered his office, he briefly looked up. He smiled.

"Dad... come and see."

I walked over and stood beside him. On the screen, I saw a room slowly come to life. A floor. A wall. Another color. A different tile size. With a few simple actions, the entire atmosphere of the room changed. I remained silent for a few moments. Not only because the technology impressed me.

But because I suddenly saw something far greater. I saw the future. I gently placed my hand on his shoulder.

"Do you realize what you're creating?" He shrugged slightly.

"A computer program."

I smiled and gently shook my head.

"No, Marco. You're giving people the ability to see their space before the first tile has been laid."

He looked at the screen again. For a few seconds, he said nothing. Then he replied softly:

"Actually, I'd never looked at it that way."

That single moment showed exactly how we complemented each other. Marco saw what technology could do. I saw what it could mean for people. After a while, he turned off the computer.

"Would you like a coffee?"

Of course I wanted a coffee. In the Pyramid's small kitchen, I prepared two simple espressos. Nothing special. No hurry. Only a father and his son. We sat down by the window. From there, we could see the parking lot illuminated by the streetlights. Beyond it, there was only darkness. Marco took a sip of coffee.

"You know, Dad..."

He fell silent for a moment.

"Sometimes I wonder whether people will ever truly understand what we're trying to do."

I looked outside for a moment. Then I turned back to him.

"Perhaps not today. Perhaps not tomorrow either. But if we continue to believe in what we're doing, one day someone will say, 'Why didn't anyone think of this sooner?'"

He smiled. That was enough. No other words were necessary. We continued drinking our coffee in silence. Sometimes silence is the most beautiful conversation two people can share. When we finally turned off the lights and left the building together, I looked back one last time. The Glass Pyramid stood peacefully in the night. Only the reflections of the streetlights danced on its transparent walls.

At that moment, I could not possibly foresee all the joy, hope, worry, and pain that building would still hold for us. To me, it was simply the place where a father and son had the privilege of building their dream together, day after day. And the truth is... even now that I know how our story would end... I would gladly live that evening one more time.

Stand beside Marco once more. Drink that coffee with him once more. Believe together once more. Some moments are so precious that, despite all the pain that may follow, we would not exchange them for any riches in the world. When I close my eyes today, I still hear the soft sound of rain against the glass. And somewhere, in a dimly lit office in the Pyramid, I still see my son sitting.

Full of enthusiasm. Full of ideas. Full of life. It is an image no one will ever be able to take from me.
