An Unexpected Encounter Along the Way

There are events in life that no one can foresee. Perhaps that is precisely why some of them remain with us forever. One such memory takes me back to December 1994. Together with Marco and my brother Carmine, I had traveled to Italy. We had an important meeting with the management of INCONTRO, a ceramic factory located near Castel del Monte. A great deal was at stake for us.

After months of conversations and consultation, we finally had the opportunity to present our plans for the Benelux. We were not speaking only about ceramic tiles. We were speaking about the future. New ways to present collections. Marketing. Digital communication. A collaboration that would go far beyond the traditional relationship between a factory and its representative. The meeting went even better than we had dared to hope.

At the end of our discussions, we received the trust for which we had worked so long. We were appointed INCONTRO's representatives for the Benelux. We left the factory with hearts full of gratitude. Not only because we had reached an agreement, but above all because another person believed in us. As so often in Italy, we ended that special day with a meal at the foot of the impressive Castel del Monte.

We continued speaking about everything we hoped to accomplish. Marco's mind was full of ideas. I listened. And from time to time, I smiled. I recognized in him the same enthusiasm that had driven me when I took my first steps as an entrepreneur. After the meal, we began the long journey back to Belgium. None of us could imagine that the day still had one final surprise in store.

During a stop at a highway rest area, we noticed that an unusually large group had gathered nearby. As so often, our curiosity prevailed. We walked over to see what was happening. At the center of the crowd stood a young woman who immediately drew everyone's attention. Not only because of her beauty.

But above all because many travelers seemed to recognize her. It was Jennie Garth, known around the world for her role as Kelly Taylor in the popular television series Beverly Hills, 90210. At first, I did not recognize her. Marco did. Because he spoke English well, he began a conversation with her and the people accompanying her. It began as a brief exchange between travelers who happened to be in the same place. A few questions. A few smiles. An exchange of contact information.

There was nothing to suggest that this brief encounter would remain with us afterward. Back in Belgium, we resumed our usual work. But a few weeks later, material began arriving unexpectedly. Faxes. Promotional material.

Photographs. Messages from the United States. It was all connected to that chance meeting at the highway rest area. Above all, it gave Marco new energy and motivation. The world suddenly seemed smaller. And the possibilities much greater. It opened our eyes.

Not because we had met a famous actress, but because we understood once again how rapidly international communication was changing. Suddenly, we saw new possibilities. Not for television or entertainment, but for our own company. If information could cross the Atlantic Ocean so quickly, why could ceramic collections not be presented internationally in a comparable way? That brief encounter unleashed a new flood of ideas.

We continued investing in computers. In fax systems. In mobile phones. And above all, in new ways to connect factories and customers faster than ever before. At first glance, this may seem no more than a pleasant anecdote. To me, it always meant much more. That encounter once again confirmed what I have believed throughout my life.

Sometimes a life is not changed by grand plans. Sometimes something begins with an unexpected meeting.

With a conversation lasting only a few minutes. With someone who crosses your path in the most unexpected place. I do not know whether Jennie still remembers that brief encounter today. Probably not. But without knowing it, she became a small part of a much larger story for us. Not because she was famous.

But because that meeting showed us again how quickly the world was changing. And that people who look toward the future with curiosity sometimes see possibilities where others see only coincidence. When I think back on that day today, I still smile. Not because of the celebrity we had met.

But because of the beauty of those unexpected moments life sometimes gives us. Some meetings last only a few minutes. And yet, decades later, they can still bring a smile to our face.
